A knowledge of the history of design will expand your horizons and provide inspiration.

Most designers don't look toward the past. They figure "why should we?" Afterall, we now have the equipment and software to design a page exactly the way we want to.

If you don't know your past, you don't know how we got to today. AND you won't know why we have the rules in design that we do. Most compellingly, sometimes, it's appropriate to design according to a particular era (ex: a 70s theme disco party) and if we don't know the history of design, we won't be able to do that.

We'll examine the following in history:

• Era: You'll see how design evolved throughout time. Find out what colors and typefaces were in vogue in a particular decade.
• Timeless design principles: Learn how graphic design principles came into being and why.
