Bookshelf
Books that should be a part of any designer's bookshelf.
Reading from the experienced designers is one of the best ways for both new and accomplished designers to discover tips and techniques to improve on their skills. I'm not talking about just software books either! I'm talking about design fundamentals, typography, color, production, self-promotion and marketing books.
- Design books: These address the design basics: fundamental principles, design elements, color, illustration, photography, and typography.
- Design books by specific format: These are books that are about a particular design format: multimedia, newsletters, publications, postcards, websites, and more.
- Advertising and marketing books: Talent is not enough, learning how to market yourself effectively is necessary for getting the word out about who you are and what you do. Learning marketing principles will also help you in designing more effectively for your clients by using timeless advertising and marketing techniques.
- Portfolio books: The portfolio plays an intricate role in how you market yourself. Learn how the best designer present theirs and what to include in yours.
- Production books: Learn the latest pre-press and printing techniques. It's important to know printing, as you have to make sure that your documents will print exactly as you intended. Or, more importantly, you haven't set up your document in a way that will cost more to print!
- Software books: We'll be reviewing the best software books. We'll include those books that help you make the most of your software and work more efficiently with your program.

Review of "Editing by Design" by Jan V. White
This book should have a prominent place on the bookshelf of any designer. "Editing by Design" is one of those books that if you only had to bring one design book with you on a desert island, this would be it. It's that good and a good reference. Read here my review of the classic tome and why it's still as relevant today as it was 30 years ago when it first came out! . . . READ ON >
